What is compentency-based learning (CB)?

Woman working on a laptop at home in a comfortable setting

What's unique about CB programs?

You’re scheduled in 4 courses concurrently over a span of 16 weeks. CB programs encourage individual learning and provide an opportunity to engage with fellow students. You’ll also receive support and guidance from faculty in your courses and a dedicated faculty mentor in your program.

How does CB work?
  1. Start your group of courses with the support of a faculty mentor.
  2. Take 3 to 4 courses at your own pace every 16-week period. Spend less time on material you know and more time on new subject matter.
  3. Once ready, faculty can unlock competency assessments so you can demonstrate what you know and how to apply it.

With their educational leadership, they help translate theory into skills you can put into practice right away. They know firsthand what works and what doesn’t, often from their own workplaces.

Industry advisory councils

Education never stands still. And neither does the workplace. Our industry advisory councils are made up of leaders in their fields who meet periodically to review industry trends. They advise our colleges on what’s changing, so our online learning curriculum meets the latest expectations for your career goals.

Trusted accreditation for 45 years

University of Phoenix has been continually accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), hlcommission.org, since 1978. What does that mean? You’ll receive an education that meets recognized quality standards. Specific business, counseling, education and nursing programs have also received programmatic accreditation.

Alignment with industry standards and exams

Select master’s programs at University of Phoenix align with industry standards and may educationally prepare you to sit for relevant industry certification exams. For instance, our Master of Health Administration aligns with American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) standards. Our master’s degrees in nursing, information systems and cybersecurity may educationally prepare you to sit for a certification exam, but our programs do not include certification.

Amber Perez - Taking her future back

0:03 I had been working as a nurse, and I had suffered a back injury. 0:07 It was actually pretty devastating for me because I was not going to be able to work at the bedside as a nurse anymore. 0:12 At that time, my colleague said, you've got a fire in you. You've got more to offer. Have you thought about going back to school? 0:21 I had three young children. I was working two jobs. There was no other opportunity for me to go back to school other than online. 0:30 Because of the flexibility of the University of Phoenix, I didn't miss soccer games. I didn't miss baseball games. 0:37 I was present. I wasn't gone. I didn't drive away and go to school, and they won't look back and say Mom wasn't there. 0:43 It really let me still be me and have a life, have friendships, engage in my job. 0:49 Now I am the clinical director for a medical device company. I work with hospitals all over the country, helping to establish injury prevention programs. 0:58 There's no way I would have made the impact or the difference that I'm making without the support, the confidence, and the education that I was provided.
